9 Tips For Acing Your Zoom Interview & Getting The Job

With the pandemic on its second wave, your could-be future employers prefer a zoom interview to an in-person one. Don’t forget that the protocols remain the same even if the scenario changes. Here are some tips which will help you ace your next zoom interview. 

1. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ENTERED THE RIGHT DETAILS

Now, this sounds obvious, but many times in a rush we forget to check whether we have entered the correct name or not. Also, ensure that the profile picture on your zoom meeting is a decent one. These may seem like subtle details which no one pays attention to but when presented incorrectly these will set a 'wrong' first impression in front of your employers. Ensure that your speaker and microphone are working properly to avoid any audio problems during the interview.

2. PLACE YOUR EYES ON THE CAMERA WHILE TALKING

In-person interviews were all about maintaining eye-contact with your prospective employer but how should one ensure that over a zoom call? Video chat makes things different, but to sidestep the hurdle of your employer thinking that you are looking at yourself, try to look into the camera while speaking. This creates the illusion that you are looking at them, and also conveys confidence and respect. 

3. CHOOSE AN APPROPRIATE BACKGROUND

We know this is not your passport photo clicking session but it’s really important to find a plain background. If not, try reducing any background distractions by sophisticated décor pieces. This will make you look more organised and also they will appreciate the fact that you pay attention to details. 

4. UNDERSTAND YOUR LIGHTING  

It’s the one factor that can botch an interview if not managed correctly. The interviewer should be able to see your body language and facial expressions on a Zoom call. Make sure to choose a room with adequate lighting. Ensure you have plenty of light overall but not so much that it creates glares if you have eyeglasses on.

5. GOOD INTERNET CONNECTION – UNDOUBTEDLY YES

We know it sounds obvious but make sure to always check this. Test out your internet connection before your interview call. If necessary, do a demo call with your friend or cousin to ensure nothing goes wrong at the time of your interview. In the worst-case scenario, if the internet creates problems, don’t panic. Call your interviewer and inform him about the same. 

6. BE THANKFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY

A thank you note is natural when you get shortlisted. But saying a thank you even if not selected is important. It conveys that you were genuinely grateful for their time and their consideration of you for the position. Also, make sure to let them know you are available for any help they may require in the future. 

7. FORMALS – YOUR MUST-HAVE ESSENTIALS

We understand how tedious it gets to dress up like you are going for an in-person interview but formal wear is always the best and the safest option. Dressing sharp not only conveys professionalism to the interviewer but also places you in the right psychological space to excel in the interview.

8. ASKING QUESTIONS AT THE END

Prepare a list of questions before the interview to ask your interviewer. Questions about the company's culture, responsibilities for the role you are assigned or working hours help you know your profile and company better. Some of the questions you could ask them are- "What are the company’s goals this quarter?", "How would you describe the ideal candidate for this position?", "Can you walk me through the next steps of the hiring process?".

9. REHEARSING IS A MUST EVEN FOR ZOOM INTERVIEWS 

One of the best ways to prepare for any interview be it zoom or in-person is practising for the same. It will not only reduce stress before your actual interview but will also allow you to focus on answering questions with ease rather than struggling to find the right words. You can make a Post-it cheat sheet of certain ideas, questions or talking points. Stick it directly on the screen or on the wall behind your computer and your interviewer will be none the wiser.
